It’s true, we do love basil. But, we also love our customers and they were asking for something more. Our big bunch living basil will still continue to be in stores across the Kansas City area but now customers have some exciting new options.

We’re really proud to introduce a new line of products that include basil, and 10 other living herbs. You can now find the following great new choices at select Hen Houses:

  • Sweet Basil
  • Baby Dill

  • Marjoram
  • Mint
  • Oregano
  • Rosemary

Why can’t the live basil from Hy-Vee, be planted to be kept alive. I tried it with the last
bunch but it died there too! Want to keep this great herb going. Any suggestions?

Thanks for being a Cal-Ann customer, Suzy! The basil is intended to be kept on your counter in a small dish or cup of water. Because our basil is grown hydroponically the nutrients we feed it are in the water, not in the soil and it’s used to living in a greenhouse environment which is a consistent warm temperature 24/7. Lots of variables could be causing the plant to not favor a traditional planting – temperature, amount of daylight, soil nutrients etc. We hear of some people that plant them with no problem but others have had difficulty. The plant will live for several weeks on your counter giving you plenty of opportunity to use all the leaves. We reccomend disposing of the plant and picking up another one at the store every few weeks for the freshest taste and least amount of hassle. Let us know if you have any other questions!
